The Kleiberg pasture landscape owes its character to its former military use. Today, semi-wild cattle and horses graze on the large, open areas, ensuring that no woody plants grow. Three gorge-like dry valleys, so-called Schledden, cut through the protected area.
The Kleiberg is a former military training area that has not been used for military purposes since 2004. Today, the areas are used for grazing. Many songbirds, such as skylark, yellowhammer, tree pipit, meadow pipit and red-backed shrike, can be observed here. Typical plant species here include thorny hackberry, common centaury and several orchid species. The area is known for its abundance of amphibian species. The endangered yellow-bellied toad can be found here.
