The massive, medieval city wall of Soest (around 1180) is part of the globally unique green sandstone ensemble "Altstadt Soest". It is the longest surviving Wallmauer in Germany and two thirds of the former 3.8 km still remain. Today, you can take wonderful walks along this wall and through the moats, in front of which the outer wall used to run, and look into many an old town garden.

Only Soest and Lucca in Tuscany have such a walkable and tree-lined fortification system in Europe.
